(Besides the obvious fact that they are paying you.)
Stay with me for a brief detour.
If you come to my door, my sweet pup, Maui, sounds like a vicious attack dog. He will bark and growl and basically lose his shit.
This is his home. He is comfortable here. He knows it like the back of his paw. And he will defend it fiercely.
Get it? My dog is your client.
How can you expect them not to be territorial? Their business is their passion. They have put everything into it, and they know it better than anyone.
So you can't be offended or have hurt feelings if you didn't get something right. You haven't lived and breathed their experience. Instead of being frustrated or annoyed, figure out their why.
Ask all the questions (or sometimes the same questions in a different way) to get into their house without being bit.
🔹 What are your core values?
🔹 Why is your business unique?
🔹 Why do you love your company?
🔹 What is your company's personality?
🔹 What do you want the readers to do next?
🔹 What sets you apart from your competitors?
🔹 What goals do you want to reach with this copy?
Ideally you find out the why (and the whats, hows and whos) before you write copy. But you still may not land exactly in the right space. That's okay, sometimes one small pivot puts you smack dab in the sweet spot.
(Maui's why is his family. And I certainly can't argue with that. He looks truly terrifying, right?)
